Exceptional websites start by understanding your business requirements. I’ll ask you questions to understand your image, goals, budget, target markets, competitors, content requirements, reference sites and objectives. Basically, I’ll cover everything you know and want at this point.
The first step is to gather information methodically about you and your company. Many things need to be taken into consideration when the look and feel of your website is created. It involves a good understanding of you – what your business does, what you want to achieve, the target audience, type of content and your competitors. I decide what web technologies can be utilised to help your business succeed online.
The more I know about your company, industry sector, target market and goals, the better our website implementation will be. I want to make the best informed decisions and provide you with the best solutions to your requirements.
Once I’ve assessed what you need, it’s time to start planning how I am going to make it happen. I’ll map out your sites architecture, defining pages and pages sections including their flow and relationship to each other. I’ll create a functional specification — a document that sets out in detail the things your website must do, and how it will do them.
This is where we create an initial project plan for you. I will discuss and agree on web pages, functionality, time-frames and expectations.
Then I will put together a plan for your website called the site map. This serves as a guide as to what content will be on the site. It is essential to developing a consistent, easy to understand navigational system. During the strategic planning phase, I will also help you decide the choice of technologies. Elements such as interactive forms, e-commerce shopping carts, banners, etc. can be incorporated into the plan.
Once I know what you want to put on your site, I’ll create a basic outline design of where things should go using a wire frame. Here I can test that elements are positioned correctly, the navigation works and that you are happy with the basic content.
I’ll get my creative ideas flowing with sketching and mocking-up your site. Choices about layout, typography and font size and colour palettes are tested within a number of ideas. I’ll identify what works best in order to communicate your website’s goals. We’ll review the mock ups with you and refine accordingly until I have the finished blueprint.
Now I have an idea of all the elements, I’ll create one or more creative designs for your web site. Typically this is just the homepage to start off with. I will work closely with you to develop your chosen design and produce further pages. I then develop your site in the chosen content management system in the next stage.
Once your design is signed off I put your site into development. The optimal content management is chosen and the website is built from the blue print design. Your site is then deployed to a staging environment where I’ll rigorously test its functionality. This irons out any bugs before handing the system over to you.
The developmental stage is the point where the web site itself is created into a fully functional site. I utilise all the design elements, copy and functionality you’ve agreed. At certain stages I will make the site available to you for viewing. You can suggest any additional changes or corrections you would like done.
Before the website is launched, I check that your web site display correctly across all major browsers and on different size devices such as tablets and phones.
I will test things such as the complete functionality of forms or other scripts. I look for compatibility issues (viewing differences between different web browsers). This ensures that your web site is optimised to be viewed properly in the most recent browser versions. I’ll also check to be sure that all of the code written for your web site validates and meets the current web development standards.
Once everyone is satisfied with the developed website it’s time to make final preparations for launch. When I have finally perfected the site, it’s time to release it to the public.
I will test things such as the complete functionality of forms or other scripts, as well last testing for last minute compatibility issues (viewing differences between different web browsers), ensuring that your web site is optimised to be viewed properly in the most recent browser versions. I’ll also check to be sure that all of the code written for your web site validates and meets the current web development standards.

Whatever content management system I build your website in, I will provide full training and support to get you and your team up to speed. I offer initial performance monitoring and recommend a full review a few months after launch to discuss how the website is performing.
Web design is an iterative process. That means no website is ever forever perfect. The industry is always changing and user behaviour is always changing. I will monitor the performance of your website and analyse user activity with analytics. With this information we can suggest refinements and continuously improve website performance leading to business growth.
As well as providing ongoing support, I can help build traffic, increase conversions and provide internet marketing support.
